Tiananmen Square Revisited–In Wisconsin–With Snowmen

Tiananmen Square, China (1989)

1989_Tiananmen

This image has been published in history textbooks at every grade level in countries all over the world. It is a symbolic image representing the people of China--as well as people of communist regimes all over the world--standing up against communism and standing up for what they believe is right.  Literally speaking, a collection of students and intellectuals gathered in the square to mourn the death of a pro-democracy official and were met with resistance from the communist regime. Secure in their tanks, the communists cleared the bodies of anywhere between 400 and 800 protestors.

Madison, Wisconsin (2009)

Students at the University of Wisconsin take to the streets during one of the first snowstorms of the young season and build snowman upon snowman to celebrate the end of the fall semester. But under strict directions from the city, snowplows come to clear the roads and despite a barrage of snowball fire and screams of protest from the students, clear the street of anywhere between 7 and 10 impeccably built snowmen.

And history repeats itself.
